Manchester_Orchestra-Simple_Math-2011-FNT

- Release Info -------------------------------------------------------------- -

  Artist:      Manchester Orchestra
  Album:       Simple Math
  Label:       Columbia Records
  Playtime:    44:38 min
  Genre:       Indie
  URL:         http://www.themanchesterorchestra.com
  Rip date:    2011-05-05
  Street date: 2011-05-10
  Size:        86.15 MB
  Type:        Normal
  Quality:     256 kbps / 4410Hz / Joint Stereo

- Release Notes ------------------------------------------------------------- -

"When speaking about Manchester OrchestraÆs newest album ôSimple Math,ö lead
singer Andy Hull outlined the concept of the album as being a way to work
through the problems he and his wife faced in their first two years of
marriage, therein lies the problem. ôSimple Mathö finds Hull writing some of
the most honest lyrics he has written in his atmospheric explosion of a
career. Every song seems to be written with his wife in mind restraining some
of the raw violence and aggression that made ManchesterÆs previous albums so
  incredible.
Now that Hull has found a target to aim for with his wicked and sharp lyrics,
the concepts behind the songs have been honed down considerably, though not
necessarily a good thing. Gone are the bombastic anthems such as ôIÆve Got
Friendsö and ôThe Riverö as well as the snarling angst of ô100 Dollarsö and
ôPrideö of previous release ôMean Everything to Nothing.ö However there is a
different type of power to be found on ôSimple Math.ö After some halfhearted
self-depreciation on ôDeerö and a drunken sing-along in ôPensacola,ö the album
begins to develop its teeth in ôPale Black Eye.ö The song begins with a laugh
and guitar licks that bring to mind Thin Lizzy and then the listener is
startled when the name of HullÆs wife Amy is directly referenced. The song
takes a dark turn as HullÆs cracking scream begs Amy to ôbleed your pain /
into meö before directly stating ôgoddamn IÆm tired of lying / I wish I loved
you like I used to.ö It is at this point in the album that the listener is the
most emotionally invested. The song that follows, ôVirgin,ö is one of the
darkest on the album, employing a childrenÆs choir to hauntingly sing the
chorus in a manner more akin to a meat hook than a pop one.
The title track is next and is the most orchestral and epic-sounding song on
the record. From a beginning that starts in whispers before building to a
mind-shattering crescendo, the song crushes and poignant lyrics float between
the layered violins and wonderfully distorted guitars. But after this
emotional peak, the albumÆs remaining few songs are merely satisfactory. There
arenÆt any catchy hooks or emotional peaks that make the closing of
ManchesterÆs earlier albums so incredibly memorable. The final few songs serve
as a vehicle for HullÆs angst to gain closure, as per the concept album story
arc, but there is little past that for the listener.
But that seems to be the point of the album; it wasnÆt written for the fans,
the label or anyone but the people writing the songs. After achieving this
level of recognition, many bands put out an albums full of self-indulgent
pandering for the more mainstream fan base. But Manchester Orchestra has
defied those expectations by producing an album more deeply personal and more
honest than it has ever done before. Although upon reaching the conclusion of
the record, it may come off as restrained, it has to be. Had Hull spent the
recordÆs entirety screaming until he was coughing up blood, he likely would
have found himself divorced and alone. Manchester Orchestra created the only
record it could have made, and in spite of its flaws and scars, it still
stands as a solid rock ænÆ roll record and a testament to the staying power of
  this young band."

'Angles' is the fourth album from The Strokes - one of New
York City's finest imports of indie rock of their
generation. Following 2006's 'First Impressions Of Earth',
the album was recorded at the home of guitarist Albert
Hammond, Jr. andwas mostly produced by the band. After a
two year hiatus that started in 2007, the return of The
Strokes comes as a welcome relief for their loyal
following who are rewarded with some of their best work.
Frontman Julian Casablancas' trademark cool vocals are as
effective as ever, while the music blends sharp riffs with
the kind of roughness fans have come to expect.

Release Notes:

After two-and-a-half years the music that provided a soundtrack for
rebellious-yet-sensitive, coastal-dreaming pop-punk kids of the early 00’s is
back. Yellowcard have put the break to rest with the announcement of a brand new
record on a new label and tearing into life on the road again.

Returning to their pre-major label indie beginnings, Yellowcard have recently
signed with Hopeless Records for their seventh studio album, the first since
2007’s Paper Walls. For round seven (and after 3 million records sold), Ryan Key
(vocals/guitar) and original members Sean Mackin (violin) and Longineu (“LP”)
Parsons (drums) continuing with Ryan Mendez (guitar) will be joined by longtime
friend of the band Sean O’Donnell (bass), whose addition has been described as a
“natural fit” for the current mindset and progression of the group.

“Hopeless seemed to be the right place for us; they were really interested in
working with the band, very proactive, and had a lot of great ideas for us,”
says frontman/guitarist Ryan Key. “They’re giving us the opportunity to do
exactly what we want with it, and we’re thankful to have an established fanbase
that is already interested in what we have to put out.”

“We have all been big fans of Yellowcard since their early days” adds Hopeless
Records President Louis Posen. “Our team is having a great time working with the
band and we are thrilled that there is going to be a new Yellowcard album soon.
We know the fans want new music and we are honored and humbled that we get to
play a part in helping such a great band write the next chapter in their
career.”

Key said the writing process has been like picking up just where they left off,
that they “feel like kids again, having fun and driving around listening to the
music we just created, no words yet, just the music over and over again.” They
will soon begin recording with their tried-and-true producer Neal Avron – “the
sixth member of our band” – and are aiming for a spring release, enough time to
take new material and the classic benchmarks out for a refresher.

“We’re talking about a ton of different ideas, and we’re itching to start as
soon as possible,” Key said. “Ultimately, we want to make something the fans
will love. What we love to do most, is look out from the stage and see people
exploding with energy, and I think we keep that in mind while we are writing. We
miss being out on the road playing for Yellowcard fans all around the world, and
without their support we wouldn’t have a career.”

Produced by previous collaborator Romesh Dodangoda, the band homed in on the
essence of their new material in a way which would present the new tracks as
being as true to their live show as possible. The result of this approach
will no doubt send shivers down the spine of many a FFAF fan. Embracing the
heady mix of raw heaviness and pure melody which helped establish the band s
name when they were starting out, Matt describes the album as a fist in the
face followed by a kiss on the cheek . The heavier vocals take an integral
role on several of the tracks. Drummer / vocalist Ryan Richards commented on
his contribution to Front Row Seats To The End of The World It was a lot of
fun for me to do a lead vocal again on a track, as it's probably something
I've not done since way back on the first record. The visceral explosion of
riffs, screams and melody is one that fans of the band already know and love
but the constant shifts of gear in rhythm and twists and turns in this track
will keep everyone guessing as to what s round each corner. From the fast,
punky feeling of Old Hymns , through the seven-string guitar led riff
spectacular Aftertaste and the even more riff-heavy Spinning , FFAF have
crafted an album of potential classics with each track as exciting and
unpredictable as the one before it. Anthemic songs with killer melodies such
as album closer Welcome Home Armageddon and Sixteen , which actually started
life as an acoustic number, are further demonstrations of the band s
songwriting prowess and their ability to incorporate a multitude of different
musical elements. The apocalyptic sway in the title track of the album
Welcome Home Armageddon is explained by vocalist Matt Davies-Kreye - A friend
of mine was mentioning how he felt that the best thing for the planet was for
the human race to just drop dead and at times I can see and understand his
way of thinking but a big part of me has this (probably) misguided faith in
humanity to kind of steer the ship in the right direction for a change. So
'Welcome Home Armageddon' is the idea of patiently waiting for the end to
arrive at your doorstep and give you a nice big hug.

Release Notes:
--------
Denver based group DeVotchKa is set to release their new album 100 Lovers via
Anti- Records on March 1st. For this, their fifth record, the band again headed
to the vastness of the Arizona desert with producer Craig Schumacher (Calexico,
Neko Case). The resulting work is as epic as the landscape in which it was
recorded, the 15 new songs offering an emotionally charged sonic expansiveness
while retaining all the heartfelt romance and celebratory energy for which the
group is known. The record features guest percussions from Mauro Refosco of Thom
YorkeÆs band Atoms For Peace, and members of Calexico.

DeVotchKa recently took their celebrated live act across the globe, delivering
spirited performances to audiences in places such as Istanbul, Belgium, and
Poland. In Paris the band opened for Muse playing to massive crowds of 90,000.
ôTo connect with a crowd of strangers in strange lands with your music is really
a life altering experience,ö singer Nick Urata explains. ôWhen you are standing
naked up there, in the clutches of an attention challenged audience, you find
out immediately what works. And we wanted to capture some semblance of that
knowledge on tape. And so we marched into the studio battle scarred but inspired
- and this is where we ended up.ö

As much as the touring, it has also been DeVotchKa û and front man Nick UrataÆs,
cinematic work which has informed their new album. Beginning with a Grammy
nominated soundtrack for Little Miss Sunshine, Urata, who The Hollywood Reporter
named one of the top 10 up-and-coming film composers, has created evocative
soundscapes for a growing list of films including I Love You Phillip Morris
starring Jim Carrey, The Joneses starring Demi Moore and David Duchovny, and
many more.

The influence of this film work can be heard on 100 Lovers opening track ôThe
Alleyö which begins with melancholy strings before swelling into a powerful and
reflective ballad featuring Nick UrataÆs otherworldly tenor crooning. ItÆs a
style that has been difficult to describe, with journalists listing an
assortment of disparate genres including Eastern European folk, Germanic polka,
Mariachi rock - in a noble attempt to capture the bandÆs unique sound.

ôWe always hoped with this band to not get pinned down by genres, but everyone
probably says that,ö Urata offers. ôMy ideal way someone would describe us would
be romantic, exotic or hopefully just plain good.ö

2011 soundtrack recording from the veteran Avante Garde Alt-Rockers. In
Spring 2010, Sonic Youth gathered at their Echo Canyon West studio in
Hoboken, New Jersey, to watch the rushes of a new film, Simon Werner a
Disparu, by French director Fabrice Gobert. They spent the following few
weeks recording music which was then shaped as needed to fit the various
scenes. For this release, rather than present the small clips of music as
used in the film, the band went back in the autumn to the original tapes and
re-organized the various pieces for this original soundtrack release,
sometimes montaging multiple tracks together, other times extending cues into
  new sonic realms.
